01. Problem

Speedrun community members and competitive gamers lack a streamlined, keyboard-first tool to query leaderboard standings, verify runner records, and track category rules directly from their terminal environments without dealing with bloated web ads or slow browser rendering.

02. Target User

Command-line enthusiasts, competitive speedrunners, developers, and esports data analysts who value fast, terminal-native utilities and low-latency CLI tooling.

03. Architectural Solution

Built a lightweight, asynchronous CLI tool in Node.js/TypeScript that interfaces directly with speedrun REST APIs, leveraging local memory caching strategies and stream pipelines to deliver sub-millisecond terminal rendering.

04. Key Features

  • — Interactive fuzzy-search for games, categories, and active leaderboard records.
  • — Formatted ANSI/ASCII terminal tables for real-time runner position display.
  • — Configurable output flags supporting both human-readable text and raw JSON parsing for shell piping scripts.

05. Engineering Challenge

Normalizing inconsistent, deeply nested API payloads across different game categories while preventing rate-limit throttling during rapid terminal query commands.

06. Impact

Reduced time-to-query speedrun data from ~4.5 seconds (browser workflow) down to ~200ms in the terminal, providing a zero-dependency CLI utility for developer-runners.
